I wouldn’t put anything past Bernie fanatics; they hate Hillary with a passion and I assume they feel the same about any member of the Clinton family. These so-called progressives have an animus toward anyone who is not a hardcore progressive, which seems to mean any candidate other than Bernie or Tulsi (no — I don’t know why they seem to like Tulsi). They will sabotage any other candidate — they certainly have made clear their hostility toward Beto and Kamala.

I know this is a fool’s errand, but I’ve been arguing with pro-lifers on Twitter of late. Here’s what I’ve learned:

* In the calculus of whose rights count most, the zygote/embryo/fetus, the alleged sperm donor and the government always win out over what the woman wants.

* They won’t call out “pastors” who protest at the local Planned Parenthood and who tell the press that every woman who has had an abortion should be executed. (That, by the way, is a local “pastor” at a church a mile and a half from my house.)

* They won’t condemn the actions of people who bomb clinics and murder doctors and patients. Why? Because anything that strikes at abortion, such as blowing up a clinic and murdering doctors who perform abortion is preferable to the current situation.

* Pro-lifers will also baldly claim that there is nothing about pregnancy that could kill a woman. They won’t say a thing when I bring up Savita Halappanavar and how she was killed by her septic fetus because the Irish doctors wouldn’t perform an abortion.

* They also lie and say that abortion is more dangerous than before Roe v. Wade. That’s an easy one to dispel, here’s a link. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Again, I know this is probably a waste of time, but there are people who read tweets, so I feel like I may be performing a public service by countering these alleged “pro-lifers” who are actually so desperate to enslave women to our reproductive abilities.

The Australian government has been told it must cancel the visa for far-right speaker Milo Yiannopoulos following the Christchurch terrorist attack, with opposition frontbencher Tony Burke saying far-right extremism should be treated in the same way as other forms of terrorism.

I doubt it. His heroes Anders Breivik and Dylan Roof didn’t kill themselves. Kamikaze attacks and martyrdom operations are an inherently asymmetric warfare tactic, traditionally the hallmark of desperation, tools deployed by a side that knows it is against the ropes and facing an overwhelmingly superior opponent. Whereas unfortunately white nationalists have concrete reasons like Trump, Brexit and nativist governments in several Western countries to make them feel emboldened and ascendent.

One of the (current) great tragedies in our public debates is how the for-profit information distributors (i.e., “the media”) are so able to avoid this obvious discussion, so able because they are unwilling to uncover their own duplicity.

This is not a general slam towards journalism (like Trump likes to do), but rather an observation about how for-profit media needs to operate.

For example, how often have you heard Chuck Todd come out and say that he and his employer have benefited, and continues to benefit, from Trump Inc? Comcast/NBCU have a long history with Trump, a mutual history of making millions of dollars together.

This is why American politics is so constipated, so to speak. Important discussions such as perpetuated priviledge get pushed down with shouts of SOCIALISM!.

I remember getting that impression from old black and white movies about college from the 40’s. Today, if you can keep a B average then the path for us poor people is to go to a Community College for a 2 year degree, transfer as a Junior to a University to fill all the empty positions of students who washed out by their Sophomore year. It is easier to transfer in as a Junior than get in as a freshman. Universities provide some good subsidies for poorer families, and a 24 year old student (even living with parents) without taxable income qualifies for free tuition at UCB. Go Bears!

Sky New Zealand has pulled fellow broadcaster Sky News Australia off air until the channel stops broadcasting clips from the Christchurch mosque shooter’s Facebook live stream.

In a tweet posted on Saturday morning, Sky New Zealand, an independently-owned broadcaster, said it had decided to remove the Australian 24-hour news channel from its platform because of the distressing footage.

“We stand in support of our fellow New Zealanders and have made the decision to remove Sky News Australia from our platform until we are confident that the distressing footage from yesterday’s events will not be shared.”

Despite a plea from New Zealand police, Rupert Murdoch’s Australian pay-TV channel was among the broadcasters that chose to screen Go Pro footage shot by a man who slaughtered 49 people at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday.

“Police are aware there is extremely distressing footage relating to the incident in Christchurch circulating online,” the police said in a statement. “We would strongly urge that the link not be shared. We are working to have any footage removed.”

We have to recall that the terms “left” and “right” are arbitrary terms based on the seating order of the French parliament of the 19th century, and they applied simply to the pro-government vs the anti-government side of the aisle.

There are many viewpoints that are not inherently “left” or “right”, we see things like anti-semitism on both sides of the political spectrum. Anti-vaxxers also pop up on both sides of the discussion.

And there are those who hide behind fake Internet profiles to feed the flames of ratfuckery.

We have to recall that the terms “left” and “right” are arbitrary terms based on the seating order of the French parliament of the 19th century, and they applied simply to the pro-government vs the anti-government side of the aisle.

There are many viewpoints that are not inherently “left” or “right”, we see things like anti-semitism on both sides of the political spectrum. Anti-vaxxers also pop up on both sides of the discussion.

And there are those who hide behind fake Internet profiles to feed the flames of ratfuckery.

I’m aware of that. But the fact is these terms do exist and the fact is on paper I do share some values with them. They’re Keynesians and I’m a Keynesian too. The big difference is I don’t think socialism is the or rather only answer to societal problems.

I notice almost all of the media reporting on Chelsea’s comments frame Ilhan Omar’s
previous comments as anti-semitism.

So, it must be carved in stone that they were in fact anti-semitic.

It doesn’t take into account so many have already defended Ilhan Omar, and that doesn’t get mentioned in the reports

Why can’t the media report the actual truth? Maybe say Rep. Omar’s comments caused some to think they were anti-semitic leading to this sort of tenseness in public debate over those comments.

That would tell the reader/listener there is discussion over Omar’s comments and there are many opinions, not just the carved in stone and actually lazy “her anti-semitic comments.”

So there are axes being ground and the lack in depth of the reporting feeds heated and dangerous reactions.

It is going to be a very long 2019 and 2020 in political time.

Humanists believe that society should be in balance with a certain level of power available to everyone.

I have come to the conclusion that having an ice maker is not worth the hassle of finding out the line to it leaked. A similar thing happened to my parents several years ago. The line leaked underneath the sink, causing my parents to have to replace a wall, cabinets and flooring in the kitchen. My mom discovered the leak on Thanksgiving day, there were fans drying out that side of the house until after Christmas and the replacement of the kitchen structures and flooring didn’t finish until May of the next year. Oh, and here’s the best part, insurance would not pay because there was mold that my parents should have seen in the dark dark cupboard under the sink.

So yeah, I’m perfectly happy with my no icemaker refrigerator.

Be very careful. Read your policy before making a claim. A catastrophic event like a burst hose may qualify for coverage but a “lack of maintenance “ slow leak might not. How you describe the event could make a difference.

Their system is fairly similar to what we have around here - candidates are listed by party, and members get elected in order of number of votes attained except when enough voters as would normally be enough for a seat vote for someone far enough down the list that he wouldn’t otherwise get elected; in that case that candidate takes precedence over the normal ranking on that list.
Most of Europe basically elects their legislatures that way. And the guy third on the list only getting a handful of preferential votes with most voters just ticking the top box on the list is basically expected.
Yeah, the second on the list turned out not to be eligible due to immigration issues (which for an anti-immigration party is fecking hilarious) and that got him in as third on the list. Honestly though, that’s not a freak of the system so much as it is the system working as intended.
Third on the list for a party that wins two seats is NOT an unelectable position. Not even close.

…This all quite aside from him being an enormous ass, of course. But that’s the thing with democracy; voters are often more than capable of electing a couple of those without it being “a freak of the system”.

Honestly I am just going off of a description of the process that got this guy elected in a piece from a fairly respectable publication I read last night. He’s Australian so it wouldn’t be the NZ system, I’d say.

It sure as hell didn’t sound like any STV system I’m familiar with (then again those are pretty diverse even among themselves and as you said, fairly complex). Basically the first on the list got just about enough preferential votes for two seats (250K or so?), the second guy got a couple thousand but turned out to be ineligible and the third on the list simply got in on the coattails of that first listed candidate.

The party I usually vote for here in the Netherlands has had 10+ seats with none of the candidates other than no.1 getting enough “”“”individual”“”” votes for a seat. First on the list got enough for ten or so. That gets your first ten or more listed candidates in and voters completely expect this. To argue those others are only elected because of a freak error in the system would be completely asinine. Outside of a district system (like the US and UK systems) that’s basically the norm AFAIK.

I’d have to dig a lot deeper to be really sure (and sorry, I’m kinda too busy) but it really feels as if it’s only remotely like a freak system malfunction to the, shall we say, distinct minority worldwide who are reflexively accustomed to district systems. (Don’t get me wrong, IMO there’s something to be said for that approach - but being so accustomed to it does risk warping perspective a little when discussing other systems…)

I buy gallons all the time. Vinegar is a great household product. I use it on all the tile I have in the bathroom. Keeps the grout clean and tile shining. I use 1 to 5 vinegar to water for cleaning video screens. Works great.

I buy gallons all the time. Vinegar is a great household product. I use it on all the tile I have in the bathroom. Keeps the grout clean and tile shining. I use 1 to 5 vinegar to water for cleaning video screens. Works great.

Being as sensitive as I am to “deodorant” soap, it’s a really good pre-shower deodorant wash. Sorry if TMI….

Two things:

First she hired a lawyer (who wrote this release for MM) who services lottery winners. I would not do that as any decent estate lawyer should be able to do the job and frankly I suspect the lottery-specialist is like the ambulance chaser type of lawyer.

Second, note how the press release goes on about social responsibility. My question is, why does our society expect this of average people who win money, but at the same time let obnoxious wealthy (read Trump, but also Mercer, etc.) get away with just being greedy?

I bought a gallon of vinegar because it was on sale for $2.99. That and I found a recipe for a homemade weed killer. Vinegar, salt and a few drops of dish detergent.

You’ll want to watch out with that stuff if you ever want plants to grow in the same patch again. Don’t get me wrong, it worked quite well for me at a previous address when I absolutely had to get rid of some particularly obnoxious weeds that just kept popping out from under a tiled garden terrace but I suspect if the current (or future) residents ever want to take that terrace out and grow something there again they’ll have to get rid of the ridiculously salted soil (because make no mistake, it takes a LOT of that stuff to actually get rid of weeds).
If you just want to get rid of some weeds rather than locally nuking mother nature into next week (which was my whole objective TBH), consider something glyphosate-based. Contrary to popular hysteria it’s quite safe and it works at much more sane dosages ;)

Australia uses a couple of variants of the Single Transferable Vote system. STV makes my brain bleed, but basically requires you to rank your choices of candidates. That part I understand; the voodoo is in determining the winner. Someone below (fern01 I think) said the Reprehensible Senator was only the first choice of 19 voters.

I always stand to be corrected, however.

It wasn’t me (I don’t think) but the 19 is correct.

We have 2 voting systems. For the House of reps we use Preferential voting (I think the US call this Ranked Choice). You number all the candidates from 1 and the count is fairly simple.

For the Senate we have Proportional Representation voting - and people can number each candidate OR they can number each Political party (who put their candidates in order). This used to be not too complicated when you had to number each candidate but there got to be so many candidates that wasn’t feasible - so the other options started. It is the numbering of Political Parties option that allowed someone to get elected with only 19 primary votes.

Basically the first on the list got just about enough preferential votes for two seats (250K or so?), the second guy got a couple thousand but turned out to be ineligible and the third on the list simply got in on the coattails of that first listed candidate.

Good description. Proportional Representation says e.g 5 people will be voted for in this district. If there are 1 million voters, a person is elected when they have 200,000 votes. Any extra votes they get are passed down to the next person from the same party. Counting down to the 5th winner takes a long time!

In this particular case, one candidate being ineligible gave those excess votes to the next down the list. There was some discussion as to having another election because of ineligible candidates but someone (the courts probably, I don’t remember) ruled that the next eligible party member would be elected.

Another thing is to rent one of those shampooers with two metal tubs (soapy water and dirty water) and use the power of the suction to soak up the carpets. Them do the humidifier and fan bit. But get up as much actual wet as possible.

Yeah, I’ve been working on this all day. Pulled up the carpet, which is always fun. Got three big industrial blowers going in there now. This is so fucked up.

Certainly seems to violate the Constitution since it adds a requirement that is not present in the document. A political party can probably place that limitation on their candidates.

Pretty sure the Constitution says each State runs their elections however they like, picks their electors however they like. As long as all the candidates are subject to the same rules, the State can impose these conditions.
